GBD "Straight Grain" Bulldog Variation
The "straight grain" is one notch beneath the Pedigree, and while also expertly hand made from the best briar, may contain small flaws. In this case, there is a sandpit on one side of the bowl, and a small but well-done fill on the front. What offsets this is the outstanding straight grain, and even more the remarkable design, whose combination of angles and curves seems to foreshadow modern Japanese pipes. The profile is an impressionistic version of the bulldog, with a prominent heel and a ridge at the base that alludes to the bulldog's beading. The shank is tapered and oval, with distinct ridges on either side, rather than the traditional diamond shape. It is fitted with an especially comfortable handcut saddle bit that is broad and fits well in the teeth, and has the GBD roundel on the top. One does not ordinarily associate such a bold design with GBD and this, together with the superb condition, makes it an appropriate subject for your careful consideration.
