Barling c.1950 Canadian Shape 302 EXEXEL
Mr. Barling was especially enamored of the Canadian shape, and designed and executed a number of version thereof. This was especially challenging from a technical perspective, because Canadians require very large blocks of plateaux briar; and the Algerian briar upon which Barling insisted tends to grow in rather small burls. But since Barling owned and operated its own mill in Algiers, they could source the best selection.
Here we have the shape 302, an EXEXEL size, with a large, shapely bowl on a notably long oval shank, whose extended taper bit completes the shape. The grain is dense and attractive, and the color rich. Condition is first rate apart from some over-zealous buffing of the bit giving rise to a microscopic "step" at the shank.
