Barling c. 1950 Bent Billiard Ye Olde Wood Shape 452 EXEL
Barling made very few bent pipes, apparently because Mr. Barling himself always smoked straight pipes, and thought his customers should do so as well. Thus the bents that were produced had to be quite extraordinary. Consider the present pipe, a rather large (Group 5) classic bent billiard. The lines of the bowl are graciously rounded, and the shank emerges fluidly from the heel, culminating in a a handcut saddle bit of the perfect length and curvature. The old Algerian briar is cut directly across the grain, so that the left side is completely covered in birdseye, with the other side only slightly less so, setting off the shape agreeably.
It is in excellent overall condition, the mild blurring of the nomenclature aside, and an example of Barling at its best.
Gruss Arno
