Barling c. 1950 "Special" Bent Rhodesian EXEL shape 407
A delightful high grade "Special" from Barling in a unique shape, a variant on the bent Rhodesian, with a nearly spherical bowl, a stout round shank, and a graceful saddle bit in the best Barling style. The briar is notably well grained, as befits its grade. This pipe confirms my long-held suspicion that many, if not the majority, of Barlings were turned by hand, not on a frasing machine, in order to take best advantage of the old Algerian briar. The pipe shows impeccable execution, good balance, and excellent color. A notable example of the marque, in first rate condition but for somewhat weak nomenclature.
Gruss Arno
