Barling c. 1940 Quaint Hexagonal Panel EXEXEL size
This is the earliest "Quaint" I have seen from Barling. The font and sparse nomenclature dates it to the earliest days of the so-called "Nichols" period, named after the gentelman who introduced the more familiar "Pre-Transition" nomenclature, and it lacks any size designation. However, after the War it would surely have been marked as an EXEXEL.
It is cut as a hexagonal paneled billaird, which shows alternate carved and birdseye-covered panels, skillfully crafted by the great Jamieson. It's naturally finished, well proportioned, and has a fine handcut saddle bit whose original stamp is still barely visible beneath a light layer of oxidation. I'd happily remove the oxidation, but the stamping would be sacrified.
LIghtly smoked and in outstanding overall condition.
Gruss Arno
