Barling ca. 1930 Bent Billiard
Barling made relatively few bent pipes, but not for wont of the ability to do so. Rather, I suspect that Mr. Barling himself favored straight pipes for his own use, as do many experienced smokers, because they do tend to smoke drier and hence cooler. But here Barling has made a quite stunning example of the old bent billiards shape. It gives a sense of dignity and power, arising from the rather stout shank and substantial tapered bit. But what lifts it onto even higher ground is the remarkable quality of the briar that was selected, with a kind of flame grain on one side, and notably dense birdseye on the other. A special pipe indeed.
