Dunhill: 107

Dunhill 1947 Shell Apple Shape 107

Although the Duke Street store was bombed during the war, Dunhill actually set up a card table outside the shop so he could continue to sell; meanwhile, the Paris store produced pipes during the occupation. Once the hostilities had ended, Dunhill wasted no time in getting production geared up again. This is the earliest post-War pipe I have seen, and one could be forgiven for thinking it had been made in the 1920's. The outline of the bowl is somewhat crude, and it has the heavy shank and bit and the very deep, craggy blast and dramatic color of the earlier pipes. But the stampings are so clear as to be unambiguous.

In later years, the bowl would become almost spherical; but here we find it in its primordial form, appearing almost exactly as it would have done in the newly reopened Duke Street shop in 1947.

Gruss Arno
