Dunhill 1933 Shell Yachtsman Shape 142

In 1917, Dunhill developed and patented the sandblasting process, one of the most important innovations in pipe making. During the next several years, Dunhill craftsman began to refine the technique, and in the process, created some of the most striking pipes ever made. The relatively soft Algerian briar revealed its underlying grain structure in strikingly dramatic fashion, and the resulting texture was further enhanced by a double staining technique, with a Bruyere under-stain, and a dark walnut over-stain. Moreover, each pipe was entirely unique because of the singular grain pattern thus revealed. The present pipe is an exceptional example of its kind, with a notably deep, craggy blast, and especially rich color. The pipe itself is beautifully cut, with its generous Group 5 capacity Dublin bowl canted forward on a tubular shank, and a long taper bit that is asymmetrically tapered to preserve the straight line from heel to lip. In addition, the pipe is very lightly smoked, with very clear double patent nomenclature. Finally, it comes in the original felt sleeve that Dunhill supplied with pipes in that era. It appears essentially unsmoked.
