Dunhill Quaint

Dunhill 1927 Paneled Dublin Shape "SA"

An extremely rare and attractive shape from the original "Quaint" series. It has a paneled Dublin bowl, canted forward on a flat-bottomed shank with arched top. The color is most unusual. It's possible it was originally stained as a Bruyere, but the color has faded; or perhaps it was originally unstained. I am inclined to think it is the latter because the nomenclature is so sharp and clear, bespeaking careful conservation by the original owners. In any case, it's most attractive, and compliments the shape. Quality of execution is impeccable, and the condition is first rate in all regards.

Dunhill 1930 Shell Shape 24 Quaint Poker--Unsmoked!

For the British, the term "Quaint" lacks the derisive overtone it has for Americans. It means something charming, old-fashioned and authentic. Indeed, in the early catalogs, Dunhill designated a series of shapes as Quaints, and gave them letter designations rather than numbers. This shape, the only one of its kind I have ever seen, might well have been included. It has a billiard-like bowl with an irregular outline and a flat bottom, itself sandblasted, from which emerges a rather long, tubular shank. The beautiful handcut bit tapers to a narrow, comfortable button. Again, the blast is startling and deep and the color rich and variegated. A wonderful and unique pipe.

Dunhill: Quaint

Zitat:
"Within my experience, Group "1" Quaints are rare, I believe this is only the fourth one I have actually seen. 18k rose gold? Numbers run rampant, with this being the 4th time that I have encountered it. I guess where this is heading is that this would be a very special pipe in which to enjoy a delicate flake, just don't be too surprised when every pipe guy within eye shot wants to take a look at it.

Zitat:
"It iss difficult to pinpoint when, exactly, Dunhill began the concept of selling interesting shapes as "Quaints". Not that the classic shapes are not interesting, but Dunhill had a habit of always creating pipes that never seemed to fit in any of the standard naming conventions. And Dunhill enthusiasts were very quick to snap up those pieces that were out of the ordinary. Somewhere along the line Dunhill gave in to popular pressure and began regularly producing these Quaints and the results, while sometimes similar, are rarely identical. This pipe works extremely well, sporting some of the finer aspects of both the acorn and the calabash, as well as a generous Group 5 size.

Cumberland Quaint (3) with 6mm Silver Band (2008)

Zitat:
"So, what do you get when you mate a prince and a bulldog? I mean the shapes, of course, taken in a non-pipe context the very question would send even me screaming into the night. Dunhill has stretches where they do a lot of variations on the bent bulldog shape and the resulting pipe, while consistently quite attractive, doesn't fall into a conventional shape chart category. Thus we wind up with a very cool Quaint, in this case a Cumberland Group 3 that is dressed with sterling silver.

"After one has described pipes for a while, an (admittedly faulty) kind of mindset creeps in; "I haven't personally encountered it therefore it isn't out there". Until a few minutes ago, if someone had asked me to keep my eye out for a Dunhill Group "5" Ruby Bark Quaint, I would have smiled, answered that I would, but have mentally assigned the probability that I would accomplish the task to roughly the same level of my hair returning. Lo and behold, here it is! This Dunhill Group "5" Ruby Bark Quaint is imbued with a striking sense of verticality, as well as a quality of grain that is quickly making this series a legend.

Shell Briar Quaint (3) (2007)

Zitat:
"Dunhill's tradition of very classic shapes sometimes takes a detour. A master craftsman is working on, say... a 5220 cherrywood, and a flaw is found. Chuck the whole piece? No way! Now there is an opportunity to explore, in a semi freehand manner, what shape the briar has to offer. The result is a Quaint. This quaint sports a shape that is well off the beaten path and the grain is acceptable, if not spectacular. Much as I will note when I see a pipe that that I believe is under graded in size, it's only fair to offer an opinion when I think Dunhill overreached on a stamp. In my opinion, this should have been stamped a Group 2. On the other hand, I will bet a dollar to a pretzel that a flake or coin tobacco will shine in this Shell Briar.

"One of the things that I like about Quaints is how they will let a Dunhill artisan explore a bit with the form, take a piece that was originally destined for a standard shape and number that (for whatever reason) simply couldn't be executed in the manner originally intended... and let fly. Having said that, the shape in front you isn't totally unfamiliar to those of us who are partial to the Quaint. I have seen this form, or one very similar to it, used in a minimum of about a dozen Quaints I have seen over the decades. Perhaps Dunhill should assign it a number? Nah, that would take a good deal of the fun out of the idea behind the Quaint.
