Peterson c. 1940 "Premier Selection" Apple
Peterson's made before the war show much higher levels of quality and workmanship than those made later, hence the special place they hold in the hearts (and rotations) of collectors. Moreover, they have a unique and hitherto unexplained affinity for Virginia tobaccos, whose nuances they bring out quite wonderfully.
This is a rather high grade example, the Premier Selection, cut from flawless and well grained old briar. Its proportions are classical, albeit with a recognizable Irish inflection, given here by the rather long, handcut taper bit with "P" lip. Condition of this pipe is remarkable, especially given its age. It is from the famous Barry Levin collection.
