BBB 1904 Four Pipe Travelling Set
In the Edwardian period, travelling sets were the "ne plus ultra" for the refined pipe smoker. They were typically custom-made, with the smoker selecting the sizes and shapes of the pipes he wanted; and expert case makers fabricated leather covered cases lined with velvet, with intricate brass clasps. Not only were such sets impressive when removed from the pocket at the club, but they were extremely practical for travel by train or carriage, where the case provided complete protection, even for the most delicate of pipes.
Here we have a rare four pipe set, double the usual number, two of briar and two of meerschaum. It consists of two cubby billiards, one one meerschaum and one in briar; a briar bulldog, and a meerschaum military mount bent billiard. Each pipe has a surprisingly capacious Group 4 capacity, yet each is notably compact. With the exception of the bent billiard, each has a fossil amber stem. It's likely that the bent billiard had such a stem originally, but it was replaced, almost undoubtedly by BBB itself, with a vulcanite stem when the original fell from the military mount and shattered. Each has a hallmarked sterling mount. Best of all, each has been very lightly smoked (and of course scrupulously restored), and is entirely smokable.
I am convinced that all should smoke extremely well, the briar because it is ancient Algerian, the meerschaum because of its remarkable properties of heat disperson and permeability. And there is certainly a pleasure in smoking a pipe that is 105 years old!
The case, covered in very high grade green calf and lined with velvet, is likewise in excellent condition, bespeaking the value that the previous owner(s) placed upon it.
